Getting the Shuffle 1

The shuffle is a very useful flourish, and adds a beat between the tick and the tock of some of the steps in the previous section. If at any time a foot is free of the floor there is an opportunity to throw in a shuffle, this makes a satisfying tick- a sound and usually comes before a weight-bearing step.

To learn to shuffle stand feet together knees relaxed with the toes touching an imaginary or real chalk line, lift one foot slightly off the floor, gently swing the foot forward and backward, the foot needs to be completely relaxed and the swing worked from the knee, let only the front part of the sole of the foot hit the floor and rub away the chalk line, work towards getting a clear sound of tick-a-tock-er-tick-a-tock-er-tick-a-tock-er, repeat on the other foot.

OR

Stand two feet together lift and swing one leg forward until the heel strikes the floor then let the foot swing backwards and let the toe strike the floor, the movement is small and makes the sound: tick-a do lots more keep the rhythm even and make the sound tick-a- tock-er-f/'c/c-a-tock-er-f/c/c-a-tock-er, repeat on the other foot.

The aim of both the above is to be able to make two clear beats with the minimum of effort, with just a flick of the knee, the foot being totally relaxed and making no deliberate movement to shuffle.
