Traditional Children's Games(vol 1) With sheet music, lyrics, Methods Of Playing with illustrations About This Book
This is an alphabetically arranged list of all those games we used to play in school, or the ones that got played at Christmas or special occasions. Many of them involved singing, chanting or clapping and their musical content very likely contributes a basis for many of our traditional songs and tunes. It is interesting to note that although this book was published more than 100 years ago many of these games are still played by our children today.
This is really quite a major folklore reference work, consisting as it does, of two volumes each of around 500 pages. Part 1 contains entries ACCROSHAY to NUTS IN MAY and part 2 contains OATS AND BEANS to WOULD YOU KNOW. The author, Alice Bertha Gomme, was the wife of G. Laurence Gomme, who was the first President Of The Folk-lore Society which was set up in 1878.
