The Triplet
Three notes with a figure 3 placed over or under them is termed a triplet and are played in the time of 2 notes of the same value. Thus: three quarter note9 must be played in the time of two quarters- three eighths in the time of two eighths. In a movement of moderate time they are executed with the down stroke only.
