I Wonder How Long It Will Last?
Copyright, 1887, by Wm. A. Pond & Co.
Words by Susan Crawford. Music by N. J. Travers.
We oft hear of fashions so odd and so queer,
The cigarette craze is increasing each year.
And babies will soon learn to pal them, I fear;
I wonder how long it will last?
Chorus.
I wonder how long 'twill last?
We all get an awful blast!
Each cigarette fellow is colored quite yellow,
I wonder now long hell last?
When tender young men take their girls out at night
To buy them Ice cream with the sweetest delight,
Now, if they don't get but a salary slight,
I wonder how long it will last?
Chorus.
I wonder how long 'twill last?
Their tailor bills come so fast!
The girls call them looney to find them so spooney,
And wonder how long they'll last?
Now married life's pleasant, I've heard people tell,
The first year or so goes along very well;
But when all your joy is dispersed by a yell,
You wonder how long it will last!
Chorus.
You wonder how long it will last!
When all the long night is past
With some squally babby by some happy daddy.
You wonder how long 'twill last!
Now, if to the ballet some evening you'll go.
You'll see some old mashers who Keep the front row;
And oft you'll exclaim as you guy each old beau,
I wonder how long "twill last?
Chorus.
I wonder how long 'twill last?
They're sixty odd years or past!
But when their wives catch 'em and pummel and scratch 'em,
I wonder how long they'll last?
The boodlers for some time have looked mighty blue,
A few, off to Sing Sing, have bid us adieu;
But if we sent up all the sharp ones we know,
I wonder how long they would last?
Chorus.
I wonder how long they'd last?
They gobbled our money fast;
But if we had strung them and to a post hung them,
I wonder how long they'd last?
Now base ball is raging all over the town,
The people go crazy o'er clubs of renown;
One pitcher goes up and another goes down,
I wonder how long they will last?
Chorus.
I wonder how long they'll last?
They all curve the ball so fast;
Don't bet, you're a noodle to lose all your boodle,
For not very "long 'twill last!
(Jive justice to Ireland's the theme of the hour.
For long it has suffered thro' tyranny's power;
We see her still linger in misfortune's shower,
I wonder how long it will last?
Chorus.
I wonder bow long 'twill last?
Let's hope clouds will soon be past!
That valley and highland, they'll free poor old Ireland,
And long may its sunshine last!
