THE KEY.
(Chapter XI.) RECAPITULATORY.
a) • We find that the Key is a Speed-tool; and that the laws that govern the use of other speed-tools must therefore equally apply in the case of the Pianoforte key.
b): We should always bear in mind, as previously suggested, that this Tool is akin to the See-Saw in principle.1
c) This will prevent our being tempted either to squeeze it upon the pads beneath, or to punch its surface viciously, in our efforts to make Tone by its means.
d) • We shall then, on the contrary, take hold of it-upon it, and realising its resistance, feel it to be so intimately in connection with our finger-tip, as to seem literally a continuation of it.
e) Projecting our minds meanwhile to the opposite end of this tool-the hammer-end, we shall bring Force in the shape of Weight and Muscular-exertion to bear upon its bandle-its ivory or ebony
