Bishop Reginald Hebee.
From Greenland's icy mountains,
From India's coral strand, Where Afric's sunny fountains
Roll down their golden sand ; From many an ancient river,
From many a palmy plain, They call us to deliver
Their land from error's chain.
What though the spicy breezes
Blow soft o'er Ceylon's isle; Though every prospect pleases,
And only man is vile ? In vain with lavish kindness
The gifts of God are strown ; The heathen in his blindness
Bows down to wood and stone.
Can we, whose souls are lighted
With wisdom from on high Can we to men benighted
The lamp of life deny ? Salvation ! O salvation !
The joyful sound proclaim, Till each remotest nation
Has learned Messiah's name.
Waft, waft, ye winds, his story,
And you, ye waters, roll, Till, like a sea of glory,
It spreads from pole to pole; Till o'er our ransomed nature
The Lamb for sinners slain, Redeemer, King, Creator,
In bliss returns to reign.
And call on thee, that sinless
The hours of sin may be. O Jesu! make their darkness light, And guard me through the coming night!
The toils of day are over;
I raise the hymn to thee, And ask that free from peril
The hours of fear may be. O Jesu! keep me in thy sight, And guard me through the coming night!
Be thou my soul's preserver,
O God! for thou dost know How many are the perils
Through which I have to go. Lover of men! oh, hear my call, Aud guard and save me from them all!
Harriet M. Williams.
Whilst thee I seek, protecting power,
Be my vain wishes stilled; And may this consecrated hour
With better hopes be filled.
Thy love the power of thought bestowed To thee my thoughts would soar;
Thy mercy o'er my life has flowed, That mercy I adore.
In each event of life how clear
Thy ruling hand I see! Each blessing to my soul most dear,
Because conferred by thee.
In every joy that crowns my days,
In every pain I bear, My heart shall find delight in praise,
Or seek relief in prayer.
When gladness wings my favored hour, Thy love my thoughts shall fill;
Resigned, when storms of sorrow lower, My soul shall meet thy will.
My lifted eye, without a tear, The gathering storm shall see;
My steadfast heart shall know no fear That heart will rest on thee.
Translated by J. M. Neale.
The day is past and over;
All thanks, O Lord, to thee! I pray thee that offenseless
The hours of dark may be! O Jesu! keep me in thy sight, And save me through the coming night!
The joys of day are over; Oh, lift my heart to thee,
