2 I ask Thee for a thoughtful love,
Through constant watching wise, f To meet the glad with joyful smiles, And wipe the weeping eyes; A heart at leisure from itself, To soothe and sympathize.
3 I would not have the restless will
That hurries to and fro, Seeking for some great thing to do,
Or secret thing to know: I would be treated as a child,
And guided where I go. |
4 I ask Thee for the daily strength, To none that ask denied,
A mind to blend with outward life, While keeping at Thy side;
Content to fill a little space, If Thou be glorified.
5 And if some things I do not ask Among my blessings be,
I'd have my spirit filled the more With grateful love to Thee;
More careful, not to serve Thee much, But please Thee perfectly.

2 The task Thy wisdom hath assigned O let me cheerfully fulfil;
In all my works Thy presence find, And prove Thy good and perfect will.
3 Preserve me from my calling's snare, And hide my simple heart above;
Above the thorns of choking care, The gilded baits of worldly love.
4 Thee may I set at my right hand, Whose eyes mine inmost substance see, |
And labor on at Thy command, And offer all my works to Thee.
5 Give me to bear Thy easy yoke, And every moment watch and pray;
And still to things eternal look, And hasten to Thy glorious day:
6 For Thee delightfully employ Whate'er Thy bounteous grace hath given,
And run my course with even joy, And closely walk with Thee to heaven.
