YANKEE DOODLE |

In the concluding paragraph of a seventy-eight-page article on the story of "Yankee Doodle" (not including a number of pages of musical variants) Oscar G. T. Sonneck, formerly chief of the Division of Music in the Library of Congress, has this to say of its authorship: "Thus to sum up, Dr. Richard Shuckburgh's connection with 'Yankee Doodle' remains as mysterious as ever." *
In another connection Mr. Sonneck writes: " 'Dixie' is more genÂerally popular than 'Yankee Doodle' in America, though the words [of 'Dixie'] are seldom sung." He then quotes:
"'Yankee Doodle' is the tune Americans delight inj 'Twill do to whistle, sing, or play And just the thing for fightin'." |
