These songs and ballads from the Southern Highlands i.e. the area of the appalachian mountain ranges - The Blue Ridge, Great Smoky, Black, Pisgah, Balsam, Nantahala, Cowee, Tusquitee, Beech, Roan, etc. At the time of writing, this was a somewhat isolated region where the people spoke, to some extent at least, a language of the past — a language in many respects like that of Shakespeare's time — and sing the old ballads and folk-songs which comprise this collection of nearly 200 songs. Like the Lomax books this collection should also be considered somewhat of a reference work and certainly more than just a songbook as it also includes historical notes, commentary and sheet music for some items.
This is another of my scan and OCR products so please excuse the few weirdnesses you will find.
