The Germanic Peoples
I he Germanic peoplesóthat is, those peoples which speak Ger≠manic languagesócan be divided into three groups on the basis of their folklore: 1) the English, including Scotland and Ireland; 2) the Scandinavians; and 3) the Dutch and the German-speaking peoples of Germany, Austria, most of Switzerland, and other areas in East≠ern Europe. Although these three groups of peoples speak related languages, their cultures cannot be considered particularly similar, and this is also true of the styles of their folk music. Of course, the folk music of the Germanic peoples is known in different phases and varying degrees.
