THE LOVE CUP.

The scene which I will picture is sacred to my heart,
A homestead in which I formally lived:
And yet the fates had willed it that from it I must part;
To be there all I now possess I'd give;
On Christmas or Thanksgiving, on New Years, too, as well,
The family 'round the table sat in joy;
The usual prayer was said, then stories we would tell;
And father gave this toast without alloy:
Chorus.
Pass 'round the love cup, drink to those who're present;
God bless the absent, free from care and strife;
Watch o'er the children; don't neglect your parents;
God bless the mother, the helpmate, the wife.
Pass 'round the love cup, drink to those who're present;
God bless the absent, free from care and strife;
Watch o'er the children; don't neglect your parents;
God bless the mother, the helpmate, the wife.
Within that humble dwelling I first learned right from wrong,
From mother, whose teachings were so true;
A father's fond affection, a sister's love so strong,
Was mine, and yet I left them, which I rue!
No deed or action have I done unworthy of their love;
To-morrow is their wand'ring boy's birthday;
My mother's face I'll see, as gentle as a dove,
And listen to my dear old father say: - Chorus.
