THE SHIPWRECK.
Copyright, 1891, by Francis, Day & Hunter.
Words by George Bruce. Music by Felix McGlennon.
Winds were howling, waves were raging, and the ship was sinking fast;
Ev'ry man on board the vessel knew too well she could not last;
"She is doomed," the captain whispered, whispered to his new-made bride,
As she stood there, pale but fearless, by her darling husband's side.
Chorus.
Out on the angry waters, battling with the foam,
Thinking of loved ones left behind at home;
Praying to heaven above them, amid the storm and strife,
The noble-hearted captain and his brave young wife.
Ready, waiting, was the last boat; said the captain to his wife:
"There is but one seat left, darling; you must take it, save your life!
Just one kiss before we sever! Farewell, love, my wife, adieu!"
But she answered, "Husband, never! I will die, will die with you!"-Chor.
Slowly, surely, the ship is settling down-sinking, sinking in the deep;
Slowly, surely, the cruel waters rise-heart to heart to death they'll sleep!
A sail in sight! help, oh, help, they cry; they see our signals, help, ere hope is past!
The waves o'erwhelm us, eager for their prey, see the waters close around us fast.
Chorus.
Bounding, bounding over the waves, with hearts so staunch and true;
Bounding, bounding over the waves, comes the good boat's crew;
And eager hands are ready to clasp the captain And his bride.
Saved, thank God! Saved from the angry tide!
Saved, thank God! Saved from the angry tide!
