American Old Time Song Lyrics: 27 The Little Red Caboose Be Hind The Train

THE LITTLE RED CABOOSE BE HIND THE TRAIN.
Sung by Mark Vincent.
I am a jolly railroad man, and braking is my trade;
I work upon the road both day and night;
Timing switches, making fly ships as along the line we go,
And we see that all the trains are made up right.
We are always ready when we are called to go,
Whether in the sunshine or the rain.
And a jolly crew you always find, if you go to see,
In that little red caboose behind the train.
We hang one red light on each side, and another on behind,
As the day goes by and the night comes stealing on;
And the boy who rides ahead you bet he keeps it in his mind.
And sees that all the train is coming on;
And when we near a station, we are startled from our thought
By the sound of the whistle's thrilling scream:
Then we run out on the hurricane deck. while the cove wind- up the wheels
Of the little red caboose behind the train.
Now, this little car I speak of is more precious and more dear
Than all the roaches on the railway line;
And the reason why we say so is because it is our home.
And we always keep it in the neatest style:
Although we have no fashion lights, or velvet-cushioned seats,
But everything within looks neat and clean.
And many an honest heart there beats beneath the rusty roof
In that little red caboose behind the train.
