De Lisle's mother was profoundly Royalist, and not knowing that her son had composed this incendiary song she demanded upon hearing it: " What do people mean by associating our name with the revolution­ary hymn which these brigands sing ? " De Lisle, himself, when menaced in the Jura mountains whither he had fled as a proscribed Royalist, heard his song and asked his guide what it was called. It was in these circum­stances and for the first time that he learned his song had become famous as the Marseillaise hymn.
