REIGN OF QUEEN ANNE XO GEORGE II.
707
O Lord our God, arise, Scatter her enemies,
And make them fall. Confound their politics, Frustrate their knavish tricks, On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all.
Thy choicest gifts in store, On her be pleased to pour,
Long may she reign. May she defend our laws, And ever give us cause To sing, with heart and voice,
God save the Queen.
DRINK TO ME ONLY WITH THINE EYES.
All attempts to discover the author of this simple and beautiful air have hitherto proved unavailing, and, in all probability, will now remain so. Among those who essayed was Dr. Burney. The poetry is by Ben Jonson.
I sent thee, late, a rosy wreath, Not so much honouring thee,
As giving it a hope, that there It could not withered be;
But thou thereon didst only breathe,
And sent'st it back to me; Since when, it grows and smells, I swear,
Not of itself, but thee.
