In the early days the natives lived in grass huts and the picture gives a good idea of this style of
dwelling which is no longer used. In the foreground the man of the home raised his taro and in the rear
of his lot he grew his bananas, sugar-cane, papaias and sweet potatoes. The lady of the house is busy
preparing lauhala for weaving.
The sons and daughters of Hawaii are expert horseback riders and on special occasions the women
adorn themselves with pa-us and leis. A parade of graceful pa-u riders is one of the great attractions
of the Islands.
