They were not liberties but freedoms, instances not of license but of alternative propriety. They did not transgress, for there were no bounds to overpass in the singers' minds like the closed diatonic circle, only ways to choose between. Their unexpectedness to us is the warning unexpectedness of the turn in a writer's or speaker's ex­pression that points to a meaning all along misunderstood.
