'Tis the last Rose of Summer.
Irish Folk-song.
Many different poeras have been written to this old folk melody. Father Prout's "Bells of Shan-don" is the most charming setting, and there is also the absurdly comical '"Groves of Blarney". Flotow used the melody most effectively, with a translation of Moore's poem, in the opera of "Martha", which is the version we present as being the one most used. The origin of the tune is unknown, but it is one of the favorite Celtic folksongs.
