The Bunch of Violets

The Bunch of Violets

T'was in a moonlit garden not far from Barley Green,
A soldier and his true love were walking hand in hand,
Tomorrow he must leave her he promised to be true,
And from a branch she gave to him a bunch of violets blue.

T'was only a bunch of violets a bunch of violets blue,
So pure, so fresh, so dainty they sparkled like the dew,
T'was only a bunch of violets as he pressed them to his heart,
And swore by all, that should he fall with them he'd never part.

A soldier he lay dying upon a battlefield,
With a bunch of faded violets into his breast was sealed,
And he whispered to his comrade as life was fading fast,
Take back her faded violets I've kept them to the last.

He sent her back her violets t'was on her wedding day,
For a rich man's gone and won her from a soldier far away,
A tear was gently falling when she heard her soldier calling,
You wear these faded violets upon your wedding day.

T'was only a bunch of violets a bunch of violets blue,
So pure, so fresh, so dainty they sparkled like the dew,
T'was only a bunch of violets as he pressed them to his heart,
And swore by all, that should he fall with them he'd never part.
