covered in research; some parts of it, such as American Indian music, are well known, but others, such as the music of the recent immigrants, have hardly been touched. Some, such as the music of the Negro, have been the subject of much theorizing with in-suflScient collecting, while elsewhere, as in the English tradition, there has been extensive collecting but little theoretical work. Although research in American folk and primitive music has been in progress only for about half a century, a tremendous amount of information has been accumulated. But much remains to be done; the musical folklore of the United States is still a wide open field for collecting, research, and publication.
