Frederick William Faber was born June 28, 1814, at the Vicarage of Calverley, in the West Riding of Yorkshire.
The following December his father was appointed Secretary to "the honor'd Dr. Barrington," Bishop of Durham, and moved, with his family, to Bishop Auckland. If surroundings made poets, this region must have had great influence on young Faber. Through the domain flowed the brook Ganlesse, not far distant were "Saxon Eadmer's towers, begirt by winding Wear " and the beautiful wooded slopes of 11 merry Tyne," all celebrated by Scott. The city of Durham, with its ancient feudal castle and splendid cathedral, offered scenes of theatric pomp; for the bishop was also Count Palatine; and held his court as though he were a king.
