At bottom tried all his skiJi
To clear away the hook,. Ran round and in anger,
And then his head he shook ;
But, foiled in every effort,
He tried another scheme, With all his strength remaining,
He rushed down the stream.
" Stop," I said, " brave fellow, That plan won't do for me,
Though wisely you have schemed it, I can't pass yonder tree ;
Right well I know the mistake Now ruling in your head,
Quite safe you'd be, you're thinking, In deeps of Ellenhead.
But thither I can't follow,
So now it's you or I, This moment hangs your fate on,
Vou conquer or you die."
Just where yon stream turns, rolling, And foaming breaks away,
