In approaching the end of our subject, a retrospect may well be allowed; beginning with square-cut psalmody, with a proscrip­tion of secular music, with a most primitive orchestra, in a little more than a century America has become, at least in its chief cities, a field for the best music that the world can afford, and if the public taste is not yet on a par with the culture of Euro­pean art-centres, at least there have been giant strides toward that desideratum.
